Located on the edge of the city center, tucked into so much greenery it feels like a countryside manor, Tadao is a breathtaking Brutalist villa in a privileged location. Natural light filters in from wall-to-ceiling glass windows, which blur the line between the outdoors and the interior of this luxury property.

This stylish home bears the name of Japanese architect Tadao Ando, who believed that houses were spiritual, and within them one could search for the heart, or kokoro. The heart of Tadao is the rather spectacular sitting room, whose tall ceilings are made of raw, reinforced concrete that continues down the walls. Its openness encourages reflection, with a zen view of the garden by day and a crackling fireplace by night, and relaxation, with buttery beige leather chairs and sofas.

The haiku effect of Tadao Ando’s architecture permeates the villa, whose design carefully balances forms and space, emphasizing nothingness and creating a stark, simple beauty. Step into the home and you’ll feel an immediate peace, thanks to a palate of black, white and nude colors.Floors are stone tiles and gorgeous natural wood—throughout, you’ll find everything crafted with only the best natural materials.

The Brutalist aesthetic, with its geometric concrete shapes and straight lines, is at its best in Tadao, mixed with the warmth of the exterior and the gigantic windows. The five bedrooms are modern and soothing, and many of them come with a terrace and views over all of San Sebastián. One of the bedrooms has an en suite bathroom, with striking top-to-bottom black stone and luxuriously appointed.

The modern kitchen opens up onto the gardens, with sliding glass doors, creating an indoor/outdoor feel that makes morning coffee into a lovely ritual. Our favorite part of Tadao, however, is the private spa. Shuffle down the elegant floating staircase any time of day or night, and lie back in the Jacuzzi or the premium Klafs sauna. Finish your session off with a dip in the outdoor pool, and you’ll find that all your cares have

The Neighbourhood

Tadao is located on a peaceful street just minutes from the city center. The area is full of natural greenery, making this stay feel like a countryside getaway, with the bonus that San Sebastián’s sights, bars, and restaurants are right around the corner. San Sebastián’s center is a five-minute taxi ride away, but this area has its own sights and conveniences, as well. The supermarket Super Amara, with free parking for customers, is just a five-minute drive away, perfect for stocking the fridge. Near Tadao, you’ll find one of the locals’ favorite ciderhouses, Barkaztegi (Barkaiztegi Bidea, 42), where chasing down a rare steak with delicious, crisp Basque cider is a rite of passage. You are also right next to the city’s medical and technological district, and the main hospital is just 500 metres down the road. The renowned Basque Culinary Centre, where the best chefs in Spain and Europe regularly unite and put on events and lectures, is a five-minute drive away. Enjoy a meal there, or at one of San Sebastián’s best veggie-forward restaurants, Misura (Paseo de Miramon, 162).
